Black History Month

Black History Month at William Tennent

In honor of Black History Month, William Tennent seniors created several educational displays for students and staff to increase awareness of the many valuable contributions made by African Americans both in the past and today. Contributions in science, math, history, entrepreneurship, entertainment, culture, medicine, social justice, and many other areas are highlighted in the students' work. Thank you, and congratulations to Crystal Smith, Terryne Young, and Aniyah Bentley for your positive contributions to WTHS! A special thank you to Mrs. Lisa Slipp for her assistance.

Willow Dale Elementary School Welcomes a New Friend

The National 2022 Black History Month theme is Black Health and Wellness to help celebrate the contributions and breakthroughs of Black professionals. This year, Willow Dale encouraged their teachers to celebrate past pioneers and introduce them to present-day people making significant contributions to society. In addition to learning about a Black History maker each day on the announcements, Ms. Palkovics created a virtual Black History Museum which houses recordings and links to additional resources. The museum also highlights the library's resources being taught.

This year, Willow Dale Elementary School welcomes Willow. Willow is the creation of Ms. Kathryn Palkovics, librarian, Ms. Jennifer Taylor, library assistant, Ms. Coles, Director of Diversity, Equity, and Education, and Dr. Catherine Perkins, principal. Willow is a symbol for all who walk through the hallways of all the African Americans, past and present, who have made an impact in our communities. As Willow was being assembled, students stopped by to ask questions. You could hear many oooh's and ahhh's. They expressed their excitement to learn more.

Willow's name means grace and elegance, and she joins the Willow Dale family to help celebrate Black History Month. As you walk down the hall, you will see images and quotes that honor black past and present history makers. Additionally, the white slips of paper in her hair reflect the titles of books students may select to read in our library.

Next month, Willow will be joined by her friend Rosie in honor of Women's History Month.
