Welcome everyone!  This year at McDonald Elementary School, our students are learning a new song about the 4 B's! I am the lucky teacher who gets to teach everyone this beautiful and meaningful song, written by our very own second grade teacher, Mrs. Crounse!  Here are the lyrics so you can practice them with your families! The melody of the song is based ont he traditional folk song, "Clementine."

Here are some pictures from my collection of world instruments.  This display is located near the first grade hallway in our building.  There are instruments from all over the world: Asia, Africa, North and South America, the Caribbean and Atlantic Ocean islands.  I've collected these instruments for many years and many of them were gifts from friends and family, as well as from my own travels.  Come and explore the world with us at McDonald! Please visit my 'museum'!

    Dear Parents and Guardians,

My name is Mrs. Herman.  I teach vocal music at McDonald Elementary to all students who are in ELLKindergarten through 5th grade.  You will receive music class once every 6 days for 45 minutes.

Here are some of the activities you will be learning and doing in your music class this year:

Kindergarten: Singing, listening to music, moving to music, playing music games and playing rhythm instruments.

First Grade: Learning about steady beat, pitch, dynamics, tempo, reading and playing rhythms through singing songs, moving to the music, playing music games, playing melodic and rhythm instruments and listening to recorded music.

Second Grade: Learning more about steady beat, pitch, dynamics, tempo, rhythm, melody, through singing songs, playing rhythm and melodic instruments, games, as well as listening to recorded music. We will be using a music text book for the first time!

Third Grade: We will be adding learning how to read the notes of the treble clef when we begin playing the soprano recorder in music class.  Of course, we will continue learning more about beat, rhythm, dynamics, tempo, melody as we sing and play songs on rhythm and melodic instruments.

Fourth Grade:  Building upon the 3 years of learning the basic elements in music, we create harmony in our singing and playing melodic instruments.  Chorus begins in 4th grade and meets once every 12 days to prepare for our winter and spring concerts.  All students will be introduced to the chimes in their music class and those interested in performing in the chime choir will audition for this select group.  Chimes will meet during Day 6 recess to rehearse and will perform later in the winter and spring concerts.

Fifth Grade:  Students will continue exploring the basic elements of music and in addition, they will be learning to improvise and compose music on melodic and rhythmic instruments. Chorus continues in fifth grade, once every 12 days, and rehearsals are once every 12 days in preparation for the winter and spring concerts.  All students will be introduced to the hand bells in music class and those interested in participating in the select hand bell choir will audition for a spot in the group.  The hand bells will rehearse once a week during Day 2 and Day 5 recesses and will perform at the winter and spring concerts.
