On June 22, 2021, The Centennial School District was presented with the Eastern Pennsylvania – Alliance for Clean Transportation (EP-ACT) Alternative Fuel Visionary Award.
This award is given to a stakeholder that has taken its commitment to alternative fuel/s to the next level. Using a creative approach to implement energy efficient projects and making a difference in Eastern & Central Pennsylvania and beyond, the Centennial School District used the Guaranteed Energy Savings Act (GESA) to promote these efforts.
In 2017, CSD embarked on several GESA projects at Klinger Middle School, Log College Middle School, and the Transportation Center. These projects revolved around the idea of sustainable design and operations, as well as, energy savings in terms of new infrastructure (HVAC, Lighting, etc.). Part of our energy savings projects was the addition of a new 15,000-gallon underground propane tank (CSD is the only school district with an underground storage tank in Pennsylvania), and the procurement of propane buses to replace our aging fleet of gas and diesel buses.
Since 2018, we have purchased nineteen (19) propane buses and the Board recently approved the purchase of five (5) more propane buses. These buses have saved the district approximately $126,000 in fuel costs (gas and diesel) by going to propane. We have received approximately $92,000 from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (Pa DEP) which offset the cost of purchasing propane buses and in addition, we received $292K form PaDEP for the propane fueling station.
CSD will continue our efforts in investing in alternative fuel sources through the continued purchase of propane buses.
