ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS

K-12 ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS VISION STATEMENT

The Centennial School District will ensure that all students will leave our K–12 education program prepared to know and effectively utilize literacy and critical thinking skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening and to exhibit resiliency as they grow into effective readers, writers, communicators, and lifelong learners. 

SECONDARY ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS & LITERACY INSTRUCTION

The Centennial School District is committed to continuing to provide rigorous, research-based, and standards-aligned Reading, English Language Arts, and Literacy instruction, while at the same time providing opportunities for student self-selection and choice. Centennial's grades 6-10 program follows a core, vertically aligned curriculum and course structure that will support and guide students in developing and refining skills in critical thinking, close reading, writing in various genres, and doing research. Centennial's grades 11-12 program, Panther Pathways, is designed to help students select required and elective courses based on current and future career and educational goals, interests, and abilities.

Centennial School District's curriculum is aligned with the Pennsylvania State Academic and Core Standards.

CORE CURRICULUM COMPONENTS

SpringBoard ELA is the core Tier I English language arts curriculum for grades 6-10. This robust, standards-aligned curriculum builds critical thinking and problem-solving skills through close observation and analysis of texts, evidence-based writing, higher-order questioning, and engaging academic conversation.

MATHEMATICS

K-12 MATHEMATICS VISION STATEMENT

The Centennial School District will ensure that all students will leave our K–12 education program as global learners ready to apply mathematical skills and to use mathematical problem-solving to make sense of the world around them with success and confidence.

SECONDARY MATHEMATICS INSTRUCTION

The Centennial School District is committed to providing a rigorous, research-based, and standards-aligned mathematics curriculum that is student-centered and engaging. Teaching strategies rely on the recommendations of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and are based solidly on methodological research in teaching mathematics. The essential elements of the math curriculum include collaborative mathematical discourse, problem-based instruction, and mixed-spaced practice to support the mastery of mathematics.

CORE CURRICULUM COMPONENTS

CPM (College Preparatory Math) is the core Tier I Math curriculum for grades 6-12. This standards-aligned curriculum emphasizes three pillars of mathematical learning: Collaborative Learning, Problem-Based Learning, and Mixed, Spaced Practice with the goal of engaging all students in learning mathematics through problem-solving, reasoning, and communication.

SCIENCE

K-12 SCIENCE VISION STATEMENT

The Centennial School District will ensure that all students will leave our K–12 education program able to understand and use scientific practices to deepen their understanding of the world around them, to form a scientific "conscience" so as to become good stewards of the Earth, and to grasp the ethical dimensions and role of science in human experience

SECONDARY SCIENCE INSTRUCTION

The Centennial School District is committed to providing a rigorous, research-based, and NGSS standards-aligned science curriculum. The science curriculum is phenomena-based; students take on the role of a scientist or engineer to investigate a real-world problem which creates relevant contexts through which students investigate science. In addition, the science curriculum blends hands-on investigations, literacy-rich activities, and interactive digital tools to empower students to think, read, write, and argue like real scientists and engineers.

Amplify is the core Tier I Science curriculum for grades 6-8. Amplify is a science curriculum that blends hands-on investigations, literacy-rich activities, and interactive digital tools to empower students to think, read, write, and argue like real scientists and engineers. For grades 9-12 science, students utilize a variety of curricula depending on the science course in which they are enrolled. Students in Biology courses use Glencoe Biology as their core resource. For students taking Chemistry courses, the core resource is Chemistry: Matter and Change by McGraw-Hill. For Physics courses, students utilize the Essential Physics digital platform as the core curriculum.

SOCIAL STUDIES

K-12 SOCIAL STUDIES VISION STATEMENT

The Centennial School District will ensure that all students will leave our K–12 education program as responsible American and global citizens, not only gaining knowledge and skills through the disciplines of geography, history, economics, and civics, but effectively communicating and collaborating through writing and speaking, allowing our students to be tolerant of other cultures, religions, and beliefs based on the history and geography of the environment they inhabit.

We study our past to better understand our present while trying to create a better future.

SECONDARY SOCIAL STUDIES INSTRUCTION

The Centennial School District is committed to providing a rigorous, research-based, and standards-aligned social studies curriculum. The social studies curriculum is designed to help students understand the world around them through an inquiry-based approach. Students learn to think critically, draw conclusions, and support those conclusions with evidence, the same future-ready skills they’ll use in college and throughout their careers.

CORE CURRICULUM COMPONENTS

The core Tier I Social Studies curriculum for grades 6-8 is McGraw-Hill’s Discovering Our Past series. In grade 6, the curriculum focuses on ancient civilizations; grade 7 continues chronologically with the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. In grade 8, the curriculum focuses on U.S. History from 1787 through 1900. 


For grades 9-12 Social Studies, students utilize a variety of core curriculum resources depending on the year and course. Grade 9 History continues from grade 8 and focuses on U.S. History from 1900 to modern times as well as Pennsylvania History. Grade 10 focuses on World History by HMH, and then students transition to Grade 11 History which provides students with a series of electives, such as Sociology, Psychology, and Law & Justice. Grade 12 is Government and Public Policy (GaPP), a curriculum by Magruder that gives students an in-depth look at the American system of government and the major policy-making institutions and processes.
