ELEMENTARY MATHEMATICS INSTRUCTION

The Centennial School District is committed to providing a rigorous, research-based, and standards-aligned mathematics curriculum that carefully sequences mathematical progressions in expertly crafted modules. The math curriculum prepares students to gain a deeper understanding of the why behind the numbers, with an emphasis on foundational skills and problem-solving.

CORE CURRICULUM COMPONENTS

EUREKA MATH

Eureka Math® is a comprehensive mathematics curriculum, with an intense focus on key concepts that layer over time, creating enduring knowledge. Students gain a complete body of math knowledge, not just a discrete set of skills. They use the same models and problem-solving methods from grade to grade, so math concepts stay with them, year after year.  The eight core Mathematical Practices are taught and reinforced throughout the program:

  1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them

  2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively

  3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others

  4. Model with mathematics

  5. Use appropriate tools strategically

  6. Attend to precision

  7. Look for and make use of structure

  8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning

Eureka Math is designed to ensure mastery of mathematical practices, concepts, and skills, and is aligned to the PA Core - Mathematics, Grades PreK-12 Standards.

READING ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS AND SOCIAL STUDIES

K-12 READING ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS AND SOCIAL STUDIES VISION STATEMENT

The Centennial School District will ensure that all students will leave our K–12 education program prepared to know and effectively utilize literacy and critical thinking skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening and to exhibit resiliency as they grow into effective readers, writers, communicators, and lifelong learners.

In Centennial, we integrate Social Studies content into our Reading English Language Arts curriculum.  Through this integration, the district will ensure that all students are prepared to become American and global citizens who are tolerant of other cultures, religions, and beliefs based on the history and geography of the environment they inhabit.

LITERACY AND FOUNDATIONAL SKILLS INSTRUCTION

In the elementary grades, students learn to read through focused instruction on foundational skills that build knowledge of sound-symbol correspondences to support accuracy in reading.  The Centennial School District is committed to providing comprehensive structured literacy instruction that focuses on the latest research and has proven to be effective for all students; this includes high-quality literacy instruction that is explicit, systematic, cumulative, diagnostic, and prescriptive.  The curriculum builds content knowledge and habits of mind with the ultimate goal of fostering students’ understanding and ability to read, learn, and write independently.

At the forefront of literacy instruction, valid and reliable Universal Screening assessments are necessary to determine which students may be at risk and may require a different learning path to the same destination: proficient reading.

Centennial School District's curriculum is aligned with the Pennsylvania State Academic and Core Standards.
